18 September 2019 "I am very pleased to receive President Macron, in the first bilateral meeting with a European leader after the formation of the new government. The bonds and the common values that bind our countries are historical, they are the basis of a dialogue based on respect and solution-oriented, as befits two EU founding countries ".

Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said this, while acknowledging that "sometimes not coinciding opinions can also emerge", during a meeting with the press together with President Emmanuel Macron. "Migrants and European governance have been the focus of talks with President Macron," explained Conte.

Migrants, enough with anti-European propaganda
On the subject of migration, Italy and France have shared the need to "strengthen our collaboration with countries of origin, transit. And this concerns the broader focus on the African continent. We must promote a model of partnership with the African continent, a partnership that allows to develop the enormous potential ", said Conte, at the end of the bilateral agreement with Macron at Palazzo Chigi.

"We need to get rid of the issue of migrants from propaganda, even anti-European. Italy does not lend itself to lowering its guard against human trafficking, against illegal immigration. We need to manage the phenomenon in a practical and concrete way" . And then: "It is essential for Europe to turn the page towards structural and non-emergency management. Italy has always asked for it consistently," added Conte.

Macron: penalize those who do not participate in redistribution
With the aim of "completing and relaunching the complete revision work concerning asylum in Europe", French President Emmanuel Macron said he was "determined and full of determination" to work "alongside" with Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte. "I believe that we can defend a common position with the new EU Commission, so that all countries participate, in one way or another, in European solidarity or are financially penalized."

The French president Macron then wanted to "pay homage" to the work of Mario Draghi, who leaves the presidency of the ECB. "His latest decisions have been adopted with a great deal of vision and courage," the French president said at the end of the meeting with the Italian Prime Minister, Giuseppe Conte. "I say this forcefully - he underlined - even if someone does not want to hear it. Draghi is right, monetary policy since 2012 has done its utmost to avoid the worst".
