Previously, Macron had been received at the Quirinale by President Mattarella

The French president was welcomed by Conte and national anthems. An interview between the two will be followed by statements to the press and work dinner. Macron's last meeting in Rome with an Italian head of government dates back to January 2018, with Paolo Gentiloni still in office. The leader of the Elysée then went to the Vatican, a few months later, in June, received an audience with the Pope.

In the morning, Conte had met the Libyan leader al-Sarraj.
