In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Armed Forces (FARDC) announced that it had "permanently neutralized" the main military leader of the Hutu militia of the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR), Sylvestre Mudacumura.

This is a new blow for Rwandan Hutu militiamen of the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR) who have been raging in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) for more than two decades.

The Congolese army spokesman, General Léon Richard Kasongo, assures that a special unit of the Congolese army " permanently located and neutralized " the FDLR military leader Sylvestre Mudacumura , on the night of 17 August. September 18, during an operation that took place in the group of Bwito of the territory of Rutshuru, in the North-Kivu province, in the northeast of the country.

Prosecuted for crimes against humanity

According to the FARDC spokesman, who spoke of a great victory for the Congolese army, Sylvestre Mudacumura was killed along with several of his lieutenants. For the moment, Léon Richard Kasongo does not give more details on this military operation and sweeps away the information circulating on social networks and who attribute this fact of arms to the militia of General Gédéon.

Sylvestre Mudacumura and his men had been hiding for years in the Virunga Park, located in this territory, where they lived from timber trafficking and poaching. Pursued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for alleged crimes against humanity since 2013, Sylvestre Mudacumura had always escaped those who sought him.

The Congolese government has for a long time been suspected of protecting it. But for a year, the DRC has given pledges in Kigali by forcibly repatriating FDLR militia, and delivering a few months ago their spokesman.
