In both Umeå and Skellefteå, the question of whistle blower functions has been discussed for many years. In Umeå it was taken up as early as 2011 and has since then been bounced back and forth between different instances.
Last week, the municipality's business and labor committees said yes. Today it was pushed through in the municipal council. Now a whistleblower function is being set up for the municipality, its companies and other activities to detect any serious irregularities, bribery and corruption in the municipality.
- This is an important function to ensure that irregularities in various activities do not take root and develop into, for example, work environment problems or crime, says Anders Ågren (M), Deputy Chairman of the Municipal Board, Umeå Municipality in a press release.
However, he believes that the function should not be a first-hand option, but rather a complement when ordinary roads through managers, or those responsible higher up in the organization, do not work.
