Much is now at stake for Benjamin Netanyahu as he risks being charged without corruption without the Prime Minister's post. Getting the support of a majority in Parliament, the Kness, could give him immunity from prosecution as long as he is prime minister.

Many people believe that Benjamin Netanyahu's statement earlier in September that annexing the Jordan Valley to the occupied West Bank was a way to attract right-wing voters to form a coalition government.

The opposition Blue-white

Likud's main opposition consists of the Center Party Alliance Blue and White, led by former General Benny Gantz. At the April elections, Blue and White became equal to Likud, but it was Benjamin Netanyahu who was commissioned to form government.

When he failed to get support from right-wing nationalists and ultra-religious, he disbanded the kness and proclaimed the new election now being held.

Lieberman sits on Netanyahu's power

The person considered to be able to keep Benjamin Netanyahu in power is Avigdor Lieberman, leader of the secular right-wing party Yisrael Beiteinu. According to opinion polls, the party looks to double the number of seats from five to ten.

Benjamin Netanyahu's attempt to form a government was crushed in April because he did not want to remove the ultra-Orthodox exemption to avoid military service, something that Avigdor Lieberman's party demanded.

The polling stations are open until 21 o'clock on Tuesday evening, Swedish time.
