- This is exceptional. We have not been involved in suspected, deliberate food fraud to this extent in our municipality in the past, ”says the environmental manager of Åre municipality, Daniel Fackel.

Suspected of serious food cheating

Following a tip about food cheating, the municipality of Åre has filed a complaint against the store. The municipality, together with the police, border police, customs and the tax authorities, has carried out an investigation of the business since September 11. The result was that the store was closed until Friday.

The store is now suspected partly for food cheating and partly for lack of food handling.

- The first part concerning extensive food cheating is the most serious, says environmental manager Daniel Fackel.

A ton of unlabelled lambs

A huge amount of food has been seized in the store. These are fully or partially unlabelled goods, for example a whole ton of lambs. But other types of food are also not fully or partially labeled, such as flour and teas.

There are also suspicions that quantities of food have been re-labeled and repackaged.

The goods that have now been seized on the site have been coated with white.

- If the goods are moved, it means that the responsible person has to pay a fine of SEK 500,000, says environmental manager Daniel Fackel.

Waste and pests

The second part of the investigation is about food shortages.

- This applies to large deficiencies in, for example, cleaning, handling of waste and quantities of pests that have been found such as flour beetles and insects, says Daniel Fackel.

Ten year old food

Unfair foods have also been found, some as old as ten years.

The store is now closed until October 14. Until then, the deficiencies must have been corrected with functioning routines around hygiene, labeling and other things - otherwise a new decision on continued closure may be made.

- Just because one does not label food, ie not labeled allergens, can, for an allergist, mean a life hazard, says Daniel Fackel.

SVT Jämtland has sought representatives for the store.
