Lisbon (AP) - Thanks to double goalkeeper Timo Werner RB Leipzig has managed to return to the premier class of European club football.
The leaders of the Bundesliga came on Tuesday for a deserved 2-1 (0-0) in an intense match at Benfica Lisbon. In front of 46,460 spectators in the stadium of light, the international used his chances (69th and 79th minute), Haris Seferovic shortened (84th). Coach Julian Nagelsmann thus came to his first victory in the Champions League, after he had remained unsuccessful in the past season with 1899 Hoffenheim. In the second match of Group G, Olympique Lyon and Zenit St. Petersburg drew 1-1.
In the Sachsen was the running strong Diego Demme instead of international Lukas Klostermann in the starting eleven. They began in terms of personnel and tactics (4-2-2-2 formation) as in the strong second half of the Bundesliga top match on Saturday against Bayern (1: 1). At the 37-time Portuguese champions, the former Bundesliga professional Seferovic initially sat on the bench. Lisbon coach Bruno Lage followed the game off the bench after hitting Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League quarter-final second-leg tie last season.
Repeatedly rebuked by Nagelsmann, who presented himself in a dark blue shirt, with a red tie and light gray vest in fine Champions League wardrobe, the Leipzig played at the beginning briskly. They often lacked speed and accuracy in the switching game. "We want to show how far we are," captain Willi Orban said before the meeting. Initially, this was only possible at certain points against the control-minded rivals.
However, RB put some exclamation points: Werner tested goalkeeper Odisseas Vlachodimos (26), Marcel Sabitzer penetrated the ball deep into the box (30), Forsberg shot from a distance (41). The home side only came in stoppage time in the first half to their first chance, but RB goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi parried the header by Raul de Tomas.
Much better and much more purposeful, the Leipzig presented in the second section. Nagelsmann's team was close to the lead, shortly after the break, but Vlachodimos prevented at the last moment that the fit Sabitzer after a cross pass from Forsberg came close to the goal of success (50th). The Austrian and the Swede were the driving forces. Werner's first goal after preliminary work by Nordi Mukiele and Yussuf Poulsen was the result of superiority. His second goal was recognized by the referee Tasos Sidiropoulos only at the video referee's notice. For the attacker, it was the fourth and fifth goal in the seventh Champions League appearance.
Also Gulacsi got in the second section a lot to do. But the Hungarian presented itself as cool and responsive as for many months in the Bundesliga. When Seferovic hits he was a chance.
