Normally, the bird station staff changes every Saturday. Station manager Mikael Hake and his colleagues would have gone home yesterday, but after several days with a breeze they realized that this would not be the case. According to the forecast, the departure can be made no earlier than Wednesday.

- It is too windy for us to get back with the boat. So far, the food from last Saturday is enough, and here at the bird station there is a stock of reserve supplies of pasta and rice, says Mikael Hake.

Eight miles off the coast

The Nidingen is located eight kilometers off the Onsala Peninsula on the Dutch coast. The bird station is powered by non-profit forces.

Mikael tells us that it is shallow around the island, and although a larger boat could handle bigger waves, there is only a narrow passage to reach the pier.

- Whatever boat you learn to hit the bottom when there are such high waves and helicopter is no alternative yet. It's just to bite into the sour apple, he says.

"No time to fit"

Normally, the staff catches birds and measures and weighs them, registering species and ring marks. But when it blows 20 m / s, not many birds are in sight.

- We are pretty nice anyway. We look at birds and look out over the sea. Fortunately, none of us have a time to suit, says Mikael Hake.
