Interim Algerian President Abdelkader Bensalah announced in a speech to the nation broadcast on state television on Sunday evening that the presidential elections will be held on December 12th.

Bin Saleh, who will not be able to stand for election in accordance with the constitution, said he had decided "within the framework of my constitutional powers to set the date of the presidential election on Thursday, December 12, 2019".

This date corresponds to the deadlines already requested by Army Chief of Staff General Ahmed Qaid Saleh.

He called on bin Salih to "mobilize to make this date a starting point for the path of renewal of our state, and to work collectively and strongly for the success of this benefit as it will enable our people to elect a new president with full conditions of legitimacy, a president who takes upon himself to lead the fate of the country and translate the aspirations of our people."

He said that this election day will be an occasion for Algerians "to make their country's history and contribute collectively to the good selection of their new president and to underline the promising future of their country, the future that ancestors and fathers dreamed of."

A few days ago, General Qaid Saleh confirmed that the elections would be held soon.

He has already set July 4 as the date for presidential elections and the choice of a successor to former President Abdelaziz Bouteflika. But that date was canceled after no candidate advanced.
