Bensalah calls presidential elections in December despite street protests

The interim president of Algeria, Abdelkader Bensalah, announced on Sunday that the presidential elections to replace President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, forced to resign in April, will be held on December 12.

In a speech to the nation, Bensalah revealed that he had summoned the electoral body and signed the presidential decree this same Sunday as the head of the Army and the country's new strongman, Ahmed Gaïd Salah, had suggested, despite opposition from the mass popular movement of protest (Hirak).
