Medicine, money and jewelery are most desirable when it is stolen from the elderly - at nursing homes or with those who live at home and have home care. And every theft involves grief, increased insecurity, and fear of the elderly being exposed.

"Mom got so sad - and angry," says Cecilia Lagerquist, whose 96-year-old mother got rid of gold jewelry in her home, including her engagement ring.

"They are doing so badly"

The mother, who is now deceased, had locked in all valuables. But the stolen jewelry was stored in a bowl. There was the engagement ring, a gold necklace and the wedding ring - jewelry that meant a lot to the 96-year-old woman. The only thing left in the bowl was the wedding ring.

Cecilia Lagerquist works as a deacon and has met more stolen elders in that role.

"It is so sad to see how the most vulnerable, old and sick, are affected and how badly they are the father of a theft in the home that is supposed to be a safe place," she says.

Cecilia Lagerquist calls for legislation - see how in the video above.
