The attack was carried out with drones during the night towards Saturday. The damage was significant at the two oil plants belonging to the Saudi Arabian energy company Saurdi Aramco. According to the Wall Street Journal, the country has halved its oil production after the attack.

Pompeo: Iran is behind

The Huthi rebels in Yemen took responsibility for the attacks on Saturday. In a statement in their own television channel Al-Misirah, they say that they have fired ten drones at the facilities. But it is now being rejected by the US Secretary of State.

"There is no evidence that the attacks came from Yemen," he writes on Twitter on Saturday night Swedish Time.

Instead, he is now accusing Iran of being behind the attacks.

"Tehran is behind close to a hundred attacks on Saudi Arabia, while Rouhani (Iran's presidential ed.) And Zarif (Iran's foreign minister, ed.) Pretend to be involved in diplomacy. In spite of all the demands for declining, Iran has now carried out an unprecedented attack on the world's energy supply ”.

Trump spoke with bin Salman

Pompeo is now calling on other countries to condemn the attacks.

"We urge all countries to openly and clearly condemn Iran's attacks. The United States will work with our allies to secure the energy markets and Iran will be held accountable for this aggression ”.

Earlier in the day, US President Donald Trump said the attack had a negative impact on the global economy. He has during the day talked on the phone with Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and should then have offered US support after the attacks, according to the AP.
