Berlin (dpa) - With a view to current racism in Germany on the 250th anniversary of Alexander von Humboldt's humanist legacy of the scientist and polymath has been recognized.

"His legacy is as current as ever unfortunately in the face of racist and nationalist exclusion," said State Secretary Monika Grütters (CDU) on Saturday in Berlin during a ceremony "250 years young!" In the unfinished Humboldt Forum.

The Weltanschauung of Humboldt (1769-1859) did not correspond to a closed world picture. He stands for "the approach to the foreign" and is particularly topical "in a time when worlds clash in many places".

Berlin's Mayor Michael Müller (SPD) called the native Berliner von Humboldt a "mastermind of globalization" with a "wide-awake view of the overall context".

The Humboldt Forum in a reconstruction of the Hohenzollern Castle costing over € 600 million is due to open in September 2020. Exhibitions include the Ethnological Museum and the Museum of Asian Art of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, as well as the State of Berlin and the Humboldt University.
