Garbage disposal inspection team goes to Kunigo Island as part of Northern Territorial Joint Economic Activity September 13th 11:20

Among the joint economic activities in the northern territory, which was agreed to proceed at the Japan-Russia summit held this month, the Japanese side of the related facilities on the Kunigo Island were established for the realization of the garbage disposal field. I departed from the port of Nemuro City, Hokkaido, for inspection.

Eight people, including the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the staff of Nemuro City, and the person in charge of a company that operates a waste recycling plant, visit Kunigo Island.

According to the officials, there is no garbage incineration facility in the northern territory, and there is almost no separation, so the group is expected to exchange opinions after inspecting the current state of Kunigo Island.

Regarding joint economic activities in the northern territory, it was agreed to work vigorously toward the realization of the project at the Japan-Russia summit meeting on the 5th of this month. We visited incinerators.

However, there is a disagreement between the Russian side that wants to construct an incineration facility and the Japanese side that wants to proceed with reduction measures such as garbage compaction and separation, and the related parties will be active in the future. No legal framework has been determined.

“We would like to steadily work on the inspection of waste-related facilities on Kunigo Island based on the summit agreement,” said the director of the Environmental Management Promotion Office, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, who is the head of the inspection team.

The inspection team will return to Nemuro City on the 16th.
