June 27, 2019The first debate between the Democratic candidates in the 2020 elections was closed after two hours. A debate that touched on topical issues and during which the aspirants to the White House were presented to America. After a sprint start the favorite Elizabeth Warren lost momentum, leaving room for Julian Castro, who along with Cory Booker and Bill de Blasio established himself.

The Democratic race in the White House opened with a surprise: Julian Castro, a former mayor of San Antonio and a former Obama administration. Confident, self-confident, prepared and with clear ideas Castro manages to establish himself during the two hours of the first debate, during which 10 of the 20 aspirant Democrats competed in 2020. Senator Elizabeth Warren, the favorite of the evening, part in flown over the themes that are most congenial to it, the economy and health then loses momentum and remains on the sidelines. It disappoints Beto O'Rourke who fails to break through, confirming the polls they sell in Pete Buttigeg, the mayor of South Bend, the true emerging among the democratic ranks. Beto also struggles on immigration, a subject that sees him at the forefront of his state of Texas. Good performance by the New Jersey senator, Cory Booker, from whom, however, according to observers, he is expected to be more given his oratory skills, for which he has been compared to Barack Obama. But the format of the debate, with 30 or 45 seconds available to the candidates to answer the questions, does not leave them much room. He does not leave it to anyone and this penalizes all the candidates who, for the first time, have presented themselves to the American public, or at least to that part of America that does not know them. This was done by the mayor of New York who, speaking mostly with slogans, launched himself on the stage of national politics, also standing out against many other guys. At the Adrienne Arsht Center in Miami, candidates confront each other on all the main topics.

We start from the economy, but the minds heat up on health with each of the ten who tries to illustrate his recipe. Joining the front of aspiring democrats is the rejection of Donald Trump's immigration policies and the climate emergency. "We will mobilize 5,000 billion to free ourselves from dependence on fossil fuels," says Beto. Castro assures: "my first act as president will be a decree to be included in the Paris agreement". In terms of weapons, the biggest applause is Booker: "if you need a driving license, you need one to get a gun" he says. The climate, along with China and Russia, are the biggest threats to the United States. But there is one that beats all: Trump. The president does not tweet about the debate and its contents, even if Air Force One lets slip a twittering of criticisms to NBC and MSNBC for the technical problem that forced the interruption of some minutes of the debate. "You should be ashamed" tweeted Trump. The final declarations of the individual are the occasion to leave their message. And Castro beats all rivals by speaking in English and Spanish, and closing with a catch-phrase: "in January 2021 we will say adios to Trump".
