Former Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu announced on Friday (September 13th) his resignation from the ruling AKP party, announcing the imminent creation of his own political movement. Ahmet Davutoglu was about to be expelled from the AKP for criticizing President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

When he stepped down as prime minister in 2016, Ahmet Davutoglu had vowed not to criticize President Erdogan in public. But last July, he breaks the silence in an interview and accuses the AKP, the party in power, of having deviated from its objectives.

Ahmet Davutoglu regrets in particular the decision to order new elections at Istanbul City Hall after the defeat of the AKP candidate .

For criticizing the party to which he belongs, Davutoglu was at risk of being deported. In early September, the executive committee decided to refer him to a disciplinary commission. The former prime minister took the lead in announcing his resignation on Friday and the creation of a new party.

Not the only one disagree with Erdogan

Ahmet Davutoglu has long served Recep Tayyip Erdogan before being in rivalry and disagreeing with him. This is not the only one. Former President Abdullah Gül and former Prime Minister Ali Babacan have also distanced themselves from the Turkish head of state.

Erdogan, regularly accused of authoritarian drift, has arrested tens of thousands of people in recent years and is cleaning up his own camp.
