Already today, cars, motorcycles, mopeds, trucks, bicycles and pedestrians are gathered around the space in our cities. So a new vehicle is waiting, the electric scooter.

- We do not think that they will argue about the surface but will be united, says Andreas Lundqvist, one of several traffic planners at Norrköping Municipality.

New vehicle and old rules

When a new vehicle shows up in the traffic environment, work begins to see what rules can be applied. Today, the electric scooter cycle is counted as a bicycle, since it does not exceed 20 km / h.

In the cities where a rental system of electric scooters already exists, criticism has come. Some people think the bikes are in the way. For example, they can make it for the visually impaired. Other problems are that the electric scooters have been left a bit anyway. The idea is that when you have finished driving, you end the rental time with an app on your mobile phone and leave the vehicle where you are.

Learn from other municipalities

Norrköping Municipality is now trying to learn from others and has contact with municipalities where the system of rental vehicles already exists.

- We see a risk in terms of accessibility for pedestrians walking. There, we try to have an active dialogue with these companies if they are crazy, says Lundqvist.

Traffic planners also see the benefits of the new vehicle type.

- We see easier accessibility in public transport as an opportunity, to supplement the journey from home to the bus or tram stop, Andreas Lundqvist continues.

Do you think it will be big this way?

- I do not know. It has become big in other municipalities, but now we are a little smaller municipality is Stockholm and Gothenburg. We shall see.
