Vox has presented in the Congress of Deputies an initiative to build walls on the borders of Ceuta and Melilla to contain what it has described as a "true migration invasion." The proposal of the Santiago Abascal party is to replace the "ineffective fences and concertinas" with a concrete construction that due to its "thickness, strength and height" makes the borders "impenetrable and impassable".
"We must take strong measures," said Vox Secretary General Javier Ortega Smith, in the presentation of this non-law proposal at a press conference with the parliamentary spokesman, Iván Espinosa de los Monteros. This initiative serves Vox to place irregular immigration as a great discursive axis at the gates of a predictable election campaign and in the purest Donald Trump style.
However, there is a substantial difference with the US president. Vox does not claim that it is Morocco that finances it, as Trump does with Mexico, but has indicated that the cost does not have to "assume Spain" with its own economic resources but also bets on demanding "economic collaboration" of the European Union, because Ceuta and Melilla are the southern border of Europe. "Our European partners have to understand that we protect [Europe] from that avalanche."
