12 September 2019In the second quarter of 2019 the unemployment rate drops to 9.9%, falling both compared to the previous quarter and a year ago. Employment therefore increased by 0.6% (+ 130,000 jobs) compared to the previous quarter. It is the lowest figure after the fourth quarter of 2011 (9.2%).

This is communicated by Istat, disseminating updated data on the labor market. The trend observed by the Italian Institute of Statistics is associated with the economic stability and the trend growth of the inactivity rate - those who do not work and are not looking for employment - of people between the ages of 15 and 64.

The increase is the result, in particular, of the increase in permanent employees (+ 97 thousand, + 0.7%) and the less intense of term employees (+ 16 thousand, + 0.5%) and the independent (+ 17 thousand, + 0.3%).

Employment growth, especially in the North and slightly in the Center (+ 0.7% and + 0.1%, respectively) is offset by the decline in the South for the third consecutive quarter (-0.3%).

In the job search, the use of the informal channel continues to prevail: turning to relatives, friends and acquaintances remains the most common practice (82.7%, -0.7), followed by the sending of a curriculum (65.4%, -0.5) and internet search (55.6%, -2).

In the trend comparison, for the ninth consecutive quarter the number of unemployed is reduced (-260 thousand in one year, -9.3%), involving both genders, the different territorial areas and all age groups.
