A train derailed early Thursday morning in Tanganyika, southeast of the Democratic Republic of Congo. For now, there is still no official record, although on Twitter the Minister of Humanitarian Action has raised the figure of 50 dead.

According to the survivors, the accident occurred around three in the morning in the town of Mayibaridi, in Tanganyika province, in south-eastern DRC. The train was going to connect Nyunzu to Nyemba. The locomotive derailed and two cars fell, a third just leaned over. Several passengers have fallen, other victims would still be under the cars of goods.

Kinshasa's Minister of Humanitarian Action in Kinshasa, Steve Mbikayi, speaks of 50 dead and 23 wounded. The management of the National Railway Company (SNCC) confirms that there have been casualties, without giving a numerical assessment. On the side of the provincial government of Tanganyika, Dieudonne Yumba, provincial Minister of the Interior and spokesperson, reserves for the moment to advance any assessment before having the report of the team sent to the place of the 'accident.

Victor Umba, president of the intersyndical of the SNCC says that every time a freight train moves, dozens of people board it illegally. Last March, another train derailment in the Kassai region left 24 people dead and 31 wounded.
