In the report, which goes by the name "Operation Yellowhammer", the British government presents its worst possible scenario for a contractless Brexit. Among other things, it is feared that there could be a shortage of food and medicine in the country, which would cause the price of the goods to rise - something that would hit hard on low-income earners, according to the report.

Another conceivable scenario that is painted up is day-long truck queues at the English cinnamon, as 85 per cent of the lorries that travel the route may have problems with new customs regulations. This is a situation that can last for up to three months and trucks can remain standing for up to two days, according to the report.

The report already leaked to the Sunday Times in August, but by then the government thought the information was dated. That the report is now officially published depends on a vote in Parliament, which stated that the information would be released.

"It is completely irresponsible for the government to try to ignore these sharp warnings and prevent the public from seeing the evidence," Keir Starmer, Labor's shadow minister for Brexit, said in a statement according to the BBC.
