• Investiture: The King will decide on Tuesday if he proposes Pedro Sánchez as a candidate after the round of consultations
  • Politics Pablo Iglesias would now accept a coalition worse than the one he rejected in July

The Congress of Deputies is preparing to face a new attempt of investiture practically on the bell that marks the end of the constitutional term. If Felipe VI proposed a presidential candidate next Tuesday at the end of his round of consultations, Meritxell Batet would have two possibilities before him: to convene the plenary session of the Chamber for Thursday 19 so that the first investiture vote would take It takes place on Friday 20 and, if it is unsuccessful, proceed to the second vote 48 hours later, that is, on Sunday 22, or hurry to the extreme times and convene the plenary session for Friday in order for the first vote to take place. Saturday and if it is negative to carry out a second 48 hours later, that is, Monday 23 before always at twelve o'clock at night.

Day 23 is the last possible for an applicant to obtain the trust of the Chamber, be invested and proceed to form a Government. If before midnight the candidate proposed by the King has not succeeded, the courts will be dissolved and the King with the endorsement of the president of Congress will call general elections. The decree of dissolution and call would be published on the 24th.

In this case, and since it is an electoral repetition, the period that must elapse between the call and the opening of the polls is 47 days, one week less than in the normal holding of elections. Thus, in case of failed investiture, the elections would be held on Sunday, November 10.

There is in any case the possibility that Felipe VI finds that no applicant gathers the necessary support to be invested. In this case, he could not propose any candidate and let the days run until 23, the date on which he would proceed to dissolve the Chambers. Nothing prevents the aspirant raised by the Monarch from giving up trying to invest, as Mariano Rajoy once did, knowing that in no case would it prosper.

This morning, the president of Congress and the King have talked about the convenience of the country having a government capable of providing stability. In the words of Batet, Felipe VI considers that the formation of an Executive is necessary to maintain the prestige of the institutions.

Tomorrow, the president of the Chamber will send the list of representatives of the parliamentary groups to the Monarch who will attend the round of consultations that will be held from least to greatest. The last to meet the King will be the leader of the PSOE, Pedro Sánchez.
