US fighter jets dropped 40 tonnes of laser-guided bombs on an island teeming with ISIS militants in Salah al-Din province north of Baghdad.

The US-led coalition said the F-15 and F-35 fighter jets took part in the mission as part of a joint operation with Iraqi forces, noting that the island of Kanaous, located on the Tigris River, is an important transit point for IS militants between Iraq and Syria.

She pointed out that its forces used this amount of bombs on this island to deprive the militants of the organization from hiding among the dense plants inside the island.

The joint Iraqi forces launched an attack yesterday morning on the island of Kanaous near the district of Shirqat (110 kilometers north of Tikrit), to clear it from the remnants of the ISIS operatives who are using it as a base and a starting point for them.

An Iraqi security source said that "the attack, which was called the black soil began to bombard a concentrated and intensive coalition aircraft and Iraqi army aircraft on the sites and dens of elements of the State penetrating amid the dense vegetation covering the area."

He explained that "the forces of the counter-terrorism began yesterday afternoon to enter the island by boat, and began a thorough inspection of the island, which covers an area of about four square kilometers," stressing "the continuation of the attack and searches until the final clearance of the area and the installation of guard points to prevent the return of ISIS operatives to her".

Kanaous is one of the most dangerous areas where there is still a significant presence of ISIS operatives.

In 2017, Iraq declared victory over ISIS after a three-year war, but the group still maintains sleeper cells capable of launching attacks, bombings and assassinations in many cities.
