  • Investigation: Former Chavista chief detained in Spain conspired to introduce cocaine into the US
  • Extradition: The head of counterintelligence arrested during the Government of Hugo Chávez in Spain

The Spanish Prosecutor's Office is in favor of extraditing the United States to the head of the intelligence and military counterintelligence services of Venezuela between 2000 and 2011, Hugo Carvajal , aka El Pollo , for drug trafficking and money laundering crimes. This confirmed legal sources to this newspaper, who reported that the prosecutor of Drug Enforcement Francisco Javier Redondo supports the extradition request issued by the US authorities.

Precisely, the Third Section of the Criminal Chamber of the National Court will hold the hearing on Thursday to study the extradition of this former head of Chavismo, who was arrested in Madrid on April 12 by the National Police in the domicile of his son, resident in the capital of Spain.

The US authorities ask for his extradition to judge him for his alleged links with drug trafficking networks and the entry of cocaine into the United States in 2006. The figure that the US Government is considering amounts to 5,600 kilograms, allegedly from the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC).

The United States believes that Carvajal was the responsible person who coordinated the transport of the drug from Venezuela to Mexico, as this newspaper advanced. After his arrest, this Venezuelan military -in preventive detention in the prison of Estremera (Madrid) since last April-, became available to the instructor judge Alejandro Abascal - magistrate of the Central Court of Instruction number 6-, who decreed his entry into preventive detention when considering the existence of risk of escape.

After entering prison, Carvajal met retired Police Commissioner José Manuel Villarejo - also included in the Estremera prison - and hired the professional services of the current lawyer for this former police officer, Antonio García Cabrera . However, the Venezuelan decided to change legal representative and hire another lawyer.

Last February, Hugo Carvajal dissented from Chavismo and recognized Juan Guaidó as president of Venezuela against Nicolás Maduro . The former head of Venezuelan intelligence services during the rise of Chavismo called on the military to rebel against Maduro and support Guaidó.
