The House of Cultures of Dakar hosts until September 28, the first edition of a music festival dedicated to "beatmaking". The "beatmakers" are "sound makers", they are the ones who compose the rhythms, especially in rap. The festival Galsen Urban Beat Fest is an opportunity to highlight this trade of the shadow.

The beatmakers , producers of sounds, rhythms, often little known, deserve to be highlighted for the rapper Karismatik Diksa, organizer of the festival : " I noticed that there is no scene where one could express our art, beatmaking , where it would have its place in its own right, because it's the rappers who are in the limelight. But without a beatmaker and without a good sound behind, the rapper is practically nothing .

On-the-job learning

The rapper and the beatmaker do not go without each other. The craft is learned most often on the job as is the case of the singer Mao Sidibé: " I do not master the music theory, I do not know the notes, I do not know how to play instrument, but I arrive to draw the melodies that I want from the computer. A computer and a helmet, that's enough. If you have a sound card and a small keyboard, it's better. Even now with phones we can make beats. So it's very accessible today . "

A discipline but also a passion that they want to share with the greatest number. At Galsen Urban Beat Fest, Karismatik Diksa is targeting a very wide audience: " We do not want to be confined to the public who listen to hip hop music. We want to open this to other horizons, that's why we try to organize shows where people can come with family . The festival will not only be the occasion for a concert but also a rhythm contest between beatmakers , conferences or training workshops in music production.
