With the retirement of Director General Shotaro Taniuchi of the National Security Bureau, the appointment of Shigeru Kitamura, Cabinet Information Officer, has been decided.

Mr. Taniuchi is 75 years old. After entering the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1969, after serving as the Secretary of State, he became the first director of the National Security Bureau, established in 2014, and has supported the foreign policy and security policy of the Abe administration for nearly six years.

After retiring, Mr. Taniuchi will become the Special Advisor of the Cabinet.

Kitamura is 62 years old. After entering the National Police Agency in 1980 and serving as the secretary of the prime minister in the first Abe cabinet, he served as the head of the Hyogo Prefectural Police Headquarters and the Director of Foreign Affairs of the National Police Agency. Serizawa is 60 years old.
