Berlin (AFP) Defense Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer (CDU) wants to increase spending on their area significantly, the SPD refuses. The background to the dispute is a pledge made by Germany within NATO: Member States agreed in 2014 to increase their defense expenditures within a decade of "two percent" of gross domestic product (GDP). Since then, the German government has repeatedly pledged to reach at least 1.5 percent by 2024.
