2009 - Former Taiwanese President Chen Shui-bian and his wife are sentenced to life imprisonment for corruption.

2004 - Federal President Horst Köhler promotes the abandonment of the goal of equal living conditions throughout Germany. One has to accept different living conditions.

2001 - In the US, the worst attack in the history of terrorism kills around 3,000 people. Islamists are driving three hijacked vehicles into the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon in Washington. A fourth machine crashes on a field Pennsylvania.

1973 - Chilean President Salvador Allende is overthrown by a military coup led by General Augusto Pinochet and commits suicide.

1961 - The Bremen Borgward automobile plants go bankrupt. Since 1950, among other things, "Lloyd 300" ("Leukoplastbomber") and "Isabella" have been built in the automobile factories.

1944 - A bomb attack by the British Air Force on Darmstadt kills more than 12,000 people and destroys nearly 80 percent of the city center. The Allies are here for the first time rehearsing the tactics of the bomb fan with which they lay Dresden in rubble five months later.
