In the run-up to the first round of the Tunisian presidential election scheduled for Sunday, September 15, European observers call for respect for equal opportunities candidates during the campaign. The message concerns Nabil Karoui very popular candidate, but who, incarcerated for a fortnight, can not campaign like the others.

In their statement, European observers deplore in particular the absence of Nabil Karoui in the televised debate of 7 September. Debate that brought together 8 of the 26 candidates for the presidential election, at which the politician was initially to participate. But without agreement with the detention center in which he is detained, he was removed from the program.

Behind the bars since August 23, Nabil Karoui is prosecuted for tax evasion and money laundering. For its defenders, it is an instrumentalization of justice against the favorite polls.

So to respond to concerns, the body responsible for the organization of the presidential yesterday agreed to an interview with the candidate. It will be organized from Mornaguia prison. But on one condition: have the approval of the judicial authorities for this interview.

The European Union will be particularly vigilant in the conduct of the election. In particular on the measures implemented so that all the candidates can campaign. A hundred observers will be present in Tunisia on September 15th.
