Libyan Foreign Minister Mohamed Sayyala called on Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Aboul Gheit to play a bigger role in pressuring what he called "aggressive forces" to return to their places of origin.

During his meeting with Aboul Gheit in Cairo prior to the regular session of the League, Sayyala stressed that the return to the political process in Libya can only be under the conditions set by the Presidential Council of the Government of Accord.

According to the Information Office of the Government of National Accord, Aboul Gheit explained that the solution in Libya will not be military, calling for a return to the political process.

Hostile attitude
In an earlier interview with Al Jazeera, Foreign Ministry spokesman Mohammed al-Qabalawi said what he called the UAE's hostile stance and made it a platform to incite the killing of Libyans was a flagrant violation of all customs and laws.

Before that, Sayala had denounced the UAE's "hostile" stance by making its capital a media platform for retired Major General Khalifa Hifter's forces to incite Tripoli, calling on the Security Council to intervene, after Hifter's spokesman Ahmed al-Mesmari held a press conference in Abu Dhabi.

In a letter to the UN Security Council on Sunday, Sayala said the UAE's actions were in support of the capital's aggressors, aiding them to kill Libyans, and supporting further abuses and war crimes.

He added that the UAE's actions are in support of the coup against the legitimate government and a flagrant violation of Security Council resolutions, calling on the Council to carry out its duties and maintain international peace and security, and to put officials and supporters of this aggression under international law.

US Assistant Secretary of State David Schenker urged the parties to the conflict in Libya to urgently return to the UN-brokered political process.

The US embassy in Libya said Schenker, Ambassador Richard Norland and his French, British and German counterparts had discussed the possibility of stopping the fighting in Tripoli as part of international efforts to stop the war.

For its part, the UN mission in Libya said that its head Ghassan Salameh discussed with the British charge d'affaires Nicholas Hobton the current situation there and the international conference being planned to discuss the developments of the crisis.
