10 September 2019The last migrants left aboard the ship Alan Kurdi land in Malta. The Valletta government itself makes it known in a statement: "Two EU countries will take the migrants on board. After talks with the European Commission, Malta has decided to participate in a European solution that would unlock the impasse by offering the possibility of the landing ".

The executive led by Joseph Muscat also points out that "all five migrants will be redistributed immediately to other European states". Ten days ago the ship of the German NGO Sea Eye had saved 13 migrants in the Mediterranean. Many of them had already been disembarked for health emergencies. In addition, the crew had reported two suicide attempts.

According to Sea Eye, migrants come from Tunisia. The refugees will be transferred to the island on a Maltese naval vessel. Valletta said it had given the green light to disembarkation after Sea Eye had agreed not to proceed with the legal action previously brought against the Maltese government.

NGO spokesman Gorden Isler, speaking with the German weekly Spiegel, called the government of Valletta "blackmail". "Malta has blackmailed us. If we had not withdrawn our judicial protest, the migrants would not have been evacuated. In this way the Maltese government moves further away from the principles of the rule of law."
