The account of the prisoners of opinion launched a few days ago a campaign on social media under the label "two years on the September arrests" in order to press for the release of prisoners of conscience.

The account called for Twitter through this tag in support of prisoners of opinion, and coincided with the marking two years after the launch of what he described as the fiercest campaign of arbitrary arrests in Saudi Arabia. Immediately, the Twitter platform was filled with many posts demanding the immediate release of the detained scholars, sheikhs and opinion leaders.

In early September 2017, the Riyadh authorities launched a campaign of arrests targeting prominent scientific and academic names such as Salman al-Awda, Nasser al-Omar, Awad al-Qarni and Ali al-Omari, as well as hundreds of Awakening symbols from academics, economists, writers, journalists, poets, novelists, intellectuals and human rights activists. The authorities have yet to clarify their fate or charge them in public.

Other arrests, including academics at the Higher Institute of the Judiciary, Abdul Aziz al-Fawzan, the Imam of the Grand Mosque, Saleh al-Taleb, and Sheikh Safar al-Hawali, as well as liberal activists, continued in the following months.
