LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's Queen Elizabeth on Wednesday finally approved legislation seeking to prevent Prime Minister Boris Johnson from taking the country out of the European Union on October 31 without an agreement. The move, known as the Royal Assent, effectively means the British Queen's formal approval of the law, passed by parliament last week, despite government opposition.

The royal approval came in the House of Lords, the upper house of the British Parliament. House Speaker John Berkow said he would resign within weeks, in the face of criticism from supporters of Brexit, who believe he has broken parliamentary rules to undermine their position. Berkaw said he would not run again if lawmakers voted in favor of early elections and that he would resign on October 31.
