A month ago, two men were sentenced by Uppsala District Court for cheating on thirteen elderly people, several of them nearly 100 years old, large sums of money.

But the aging crimes did not stop, even though the perpetrators were behind bars. The police investigation therefore continued and now they are believed to have found those who planned and organized the fraud.

- We focused on the performers, and scouting led to five people - four men and one woman - being arrested this week. It's good if we can stop this now, says Uppsala police investigator Björn Berglund.

All victims are over 90 years old

The suspects are native to Västerås and Stockholm and are believed not only to have called the elderly, but also been out and visited them at home. The deceived elderly are found throughout the region and all are over 90 years, most women.

- A handful of those affected live in Uppsala County, says Björn Berglund.

The approach has been about the same in many of the cases: Someone calls the elderly and says they are from the bank. The message is that the customer has something wrong with his bank box and that there is an illegal transfer from the person's account. The caller also claims that the bank has sent staff to assist. Then someone called and cheated bank cards and codes.

The police in Uppsala cooperate in the investigation with colleagues in the fraud department in Västerås.
