07 September 2019The Golden Lion of the 76th Venice Film Festival goes to the "painful" laughter of Joaquin Phoenix in Todd Phillips's "Joker". The Grand Jury Prize, on the other hand, is won by Roman Polanski for his "J'accuse".

But it is also a 'j'accuse' that comes from the stage when Luca Marinelli (best actor) and Ariane Ascaride (best actress) withdrawing the prize thank all those who save lives at sea and pay homage to those who flee the sea they lost.

These are the main prizes of the 76th Venice Film Festival:

Golden Lion for Best Film at "Joker" by Todd Phillips (USA)
Silver Lion - Grand Jury Prize to "J'accuse" by Roman Polanski (France / ITalia)
Silver Lion - Best director award to Roy Andersson for "About Endlessness" (Sweden / Germany / Norway)
Coppa Volpi for the best male interpretation to Luca Marinelli for "Martin Eden" by Pietro Marcello (Italy / France)
Coppa Volpi for the best female interpretation to Arianne Ascaride for "Gloria Mundi" by Robert Gue'diguian (France / Italy)
Yonfan Best Screenplay Award for "No. 7 Cherry Lane" by Yonfan (Hong Kong / China)
Special Jury Prize to "La mafia is no longer what it used to be" by Franco Maresco (Italy)
Marcello Mastroianni Award to a young actor or actress emerging to Toby Wallace for "Babyteeth" by Shannon Murphy (Australia).
