September 07, 2019The number of deaths in the United States for respiratory failure presumably linked to the use of electronic cigarettes has risen to at least five. This was reported by health authorities who also reported a doubling of patients with serious breathing difficulties among smokers of the so-called e-cigarettes: 450 cases in 33 states. Federal investigators did not specify which brands or substances used for electronic cigarettes would cause observed respiratory problems. Doctors have urged caution, as they have not yet identified a particular substance responsible for specific lung damage.

The last two deaths occurred in California and Minnesota and were people aged 55 and 65. Since this summer, 450 people, mostly young, have ended up in hospital with respiratory problems. They are hospitalized for shortness of breath, respiratory crisis, diarrhea, dizziness and vomiting. For tomographic examinations the lungs appear to be affected by a very aggressive infection of which the doctors do not know the cause.

On August 24th the first electronic cigarette smoking victim was registered in the USA. One patient died in Illinois after developing a serious respiratory disease, reinforcing the serious risks associated with electronic cigarette products. Electronic cigarettes are sold with messages such as: they help tobacco smokers quit and are dangerous to health but less to tobacco. Meanwhile, however, the number of deaths increases.
