At the initiative of Colombian President Ivan Duque, seven countries from the region met this Friday, September 6 in the city of Leticia, in the heart of the Amazon rainforest to talk about regional cooperation. A pact for the protection of the Amazon.

The big summit for the Amazon that was held on the green campus of the National University, withdrawn from the city of Leticia, lasted a little less than four hours. No demonstrations so to disturb him. The Indians who were there to ensure the folklore were not invited to speak, reports our special correspondent to Leticia, Marie Eve Detoeuf .

President Jair Bolsonaro made a video conference call. Opportunity for him to reaffirm his sovereignist theses: the Amazon belongs to the only countries that own it, Brazil in the lead. So no question of letting the international community get involved.

Seven countries present

Seven of the nine countries that share the Amazon have defined measures to protect the world's largest rainforest, which has been devastated by fires, with Brazil still targeting French President Emmanuel Macron. Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia, Brazil, Surinam and Guyana were present in Leticia, in southern Colombia. Only Venezuela, which had not been invited, and France, whose overseas territory of Guiana also had a vast Amazonian area, were missing.

16 points

The text, which includes 16 points or resolutions, signed this Friday claims to strengthen regional cooperation, including satellite monitoring of the forest and prevention of fires and disasters.

" Goodwill is no longer enough ," said Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra. But the Leticia Pact contains few concrete measures. And nothing binding. The environmentalists were struggling Friday night to hide their disappointment.
