At the 96th year of life, the former president of Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe, died. It is reported that he died in a hospital in Singapore, where he had been treated since April. In 1980, after South Rhodesia gained independence from Great Britain and the proclamation of the Republic of Zimbabwe, Mugabe became prime minister, and seven years later he abolished this post and became president of the country. He left his post in November 2017 after a military coup took place in the country and mass protests against Mugabe began, and the impeachment procedure was launched in parliament. The politician’s activities are subject to extremely contradictory assessments, since at the beginning of his career he fought for independence and empowerment of the country's black population, later he was repeatedly accused of human rights violations, corruption and racism.
