2017 - A devastating quake of magnitude 8.2 shakes the southern Mexican states of Chiapas and Oaxaca. At least 96 people are killed, most in Oaxaca. Thousands of houses are destroyed. Worst hit is the city of Juchitán.

2009 - The small Pacific State Samoa reverses its traffic: From 6.00 o'clock local time (19.00 o'clock CEST) the cars in the former German colony have to drive on the left side of the street instead of the right one.

1994 - The SPD politician Jutta Limbach is elected as the first woman to the head of the Federal Constitutional Court.

1964 - The National Defense Council of the GDR orders the installation of building units, in which building soldiers can do the military service without weapons.

1949 - Federal Council and Bundestag are constituted in Bonn. Erich Köhler (CDU) is elected the first President of the Bundestag, and the first President of the Federal Council is North Rhine-Westphalia's Prime Minister Karl Arnold (CDU).
