• 'His ministers' Juan Guaidó appoints presidential commissioners with Leopoldo López at the head

The Venezuelan Prosecutor announced on Friday a new criminal investigation against opposition leader Juan Guaidó, indicated of "treason to the homeland" for allegedly being behind a plan to renounce Esequibo, a territory rich in resources that Caracas claims to Guyana.

"We initiated an investigation" to Guaidó for being involved "in an illegal negotiation behind the back of the country that intends to withdraw (...) from the historical claim that our country has on the Essequibo territory," the attorney general, Tarek said in a televised address William Saab

These facts would imply "the crime of treason," said the prosecutor, an official line, who said the investigation was opened Thursday at the request of President Nicolás Maduro.

The Prosecutor's Office maintains several cases against Guaidó, the head of Parliament recognized as interim ruler by fifty countries, who has disputed Maduro's power since January.

The official Constituent Assembly already stripped him of his parliamentary immunity in April and authorized him to prosecute "usurping" Maduro's functions, but the United States, Guaidó's main international supporter, has warned that stopping him would be the "last mistake of the dictatorship . "

In the latter case, Maduro said on Thursday to Guaidó that he was "negotiating to deliver the Esequibo in exchange for political support for his phantasmagoric and purported fake government."

The accusation is based on an audio in which a person identified by Chavismo as a US Government official with dual Venezuelan-American nationality asks a "foreign advisor" of Guaidó to change the position of Venezuela to deliver the Essequibo to transnationals.

The Esequibo is a territory rich in minerals , with a maritime zone with oil resources, whose sovereignty is a historical claim of Venezuela to Guyana.
