After the murder of 31-year-old Karolin Hakim in Ribersborg in Malmö on August 26 this year, the police went out and told them that their work becomes more difficult when the media reports on the events.

- The media risk crushing the testimonies. That is a big problem, said Stefan Sinteus, police chief in Malmö, to SVT News Skåne.

An assignment to report

Following the police's criticism, Kvällsposten and SVT Nyheter Skåne now comment on why they publish testimony and photos and films that witnesses have taken during major ongoing events.

- In Sweden we have free and independent media reporting under our own responsibility. It is an important principle that we can work freely and provide all relevant information to the public. We also have an assignment to review the police work, says Göran Eklund, editorial director at SVT Nyheter Skåne.

Has different roles

This is also true of Magnus Ringman, who is editor-in-chief at Kvällsposten.

- The police and the media have different roles. I understand his views, but I do not see that the media can act in any other way, says Magnus Ringman.

Can you agree with the criticism?

- The murder of Karolin Hakim is the biggest news in Malmö for a long time. We must report that rumors are not true, so that people get the true picture. The police have a task to find out who is the murderer. Our job is to tell what happened, ”says Magnus Ringman, to SVT.
