“The US House of Representatives calls on all leaders of the Group of Seven to oppose the return of Russia until it completely ceases its occupation of the sovereign territory of Ukraine, including Crimea, and stops the attack on democracies around the world,” the text of the resolution says.

Cyres stresses that the US House of Representatives condemns Russia's "aggressive actions" in Ukraine.

The US political line, according to the congressman, suggests that Russia can be returned to the G7 format, provided that it accepts the norms and standards of free, democratic societies that are respected by other participating countries.

“If President Trump ignores the conditions established by the international community on Russia's accession to the G7 format, he goes against US laws and the consensus of the international community. He also weakens our negotiating position, once again showing President Putin that his aggressive actions will not entail the declared consequences, ”says Cyres.

According to Andrei Suzdaltsev, Dean of the Faculty of World Economy and World Politics, HSE, this initiative should be considered not only as an attempt to put pressure on Russia, but also as a manifestation of inter-party disagreements and protests of democrats against the current American Republican President.

“They (congressmen - RT. ) Are very worried about Trump’s announcement that next year, when the United States will host the summit, Trump will have the right to call on the Russian president. Not the fact that Putin will agree and go to this summit. They want to block all possible negotiations on the extension of Russia in G7 and the transformation of G7 into G8 at the level of the law, ”the expert said in an interview with RT.

Earlier, American Donald Trump said that he would invite Russian President Vladimir Putin to the next meeting in the G7 format, which will be held in the United States.

The Kremlin emphasized that for Russia, a return to the G8 format is not an end in itself, the country does not intend to impose its participation.
