Legislative in Poland: entry into the opposition's campaign

In Poland, the campaign for the October 13 parliamentary elections will intensify today. This Friday, the main opposition group, the Civic Coalition, will present its program. With the surprise of its head, since unlike the forecasts, the leader of this coalition gives way to the former President of Parliament Małgorzata Maria Kidawa-Błońska. She is the candidate for the position of Prime Minister.

of our correspondent in Warsaw,

She became the opposition figure for this campaign. Małgorzata Maria Kidawa-Błońska is not a newcomer to politics since she is a member of the Liberal-Conservative Civic Platform since its inception.

The 62-year-old MP was spokeswoman for the government of Donald Tusk, the current president of the European Council, before becoming president of parliament.

A resume already well supplied, but we must admit that no one expected to see the great-granddaughter of a Polish president to run for the post of prime minister. We did not see her particularly involved in the last European campaign last spring.

Grzegorz Schetyna fades

And most importantly, observers saw Grzegorz Schetyna, the current leader of the Civic Platform, logically present himself to become head of government.

But the leader of the opposition has faded because of his unpopularity, even in his own camp. According to a poll published last May on the news site OKO.press, barely 1 in 5 voters in his party wants to see Grzegorz Schetyna become prime minister.

Schetyna is not very charismatic, and for four years running the Civic Coalition, he is perceived as a political leader without new ideas, simply in total opposition to the ruling party. Suffice to say that the KO as it is called here was almost shot in the foot by placing it as a leader for these legislative.

On the other hand, Malgorzata Kidawa-Blonska is seen as a moderate political figure in his remarks, and rather progressive. In particular, she spoke in favor of in vitro fertilization when she led a working group in Parliament on this issue. His candidacy could therefore allow the Civic Coalition to pick up a few votes to his left. While an alliance of three parties of the left, precisely, is credited with a score around 13 to 14% in the last polls.

Nevertheless, the opposition leaves with a few lags behind its rival.

The Law and Justice party, PiS, in power, has already started its campaign for a long time.

During the summer, the Prime Minister and the party leader participated in huge family picnics. Political meetings in reality, where the traditional values of Poland were praised and the social promises very expensive, but effective to win votes.

On the other hand, the opposition, be it the Civic Coalition or the Left Bloc, spent several weeks organizing their alliances, finding the best possible formula to try to defeat the ultra conservative PiS.

For the moment, they are leading the polls, with more than 40% of voting intentions. But the game of alliances and the distribution of seats in parliament still leave a little suspense by October 13.
