REPORTAGE

Marine pollution has become a real ordeal for some 100,000 residents close to the tourist ports of the South region. "This summer, it was unbearable, unlivable," testifies at the microphone of Europe 1 Michele, Marseillaise living in front of the terminal cruises Marseille. She continues: "We had a major pollution, the boats never stopped their engine".

So obviously, Michele is pleased with the plan of 30 million euros announced by the Minister of Transport, Elisabeth Borne, to electrify the boats when they are docked. The plan "Escales Zero Smoke" will stop engines and stop polluting emissions. The ports of Marseille, Toulon and Nice will benefit from this plan by 2023. Ferry and mixed vessels are initially targeted. Then, in 2025, the electrification will apply to cruise ships.

Dominique Robin, the director of AtmoSud, an institute for air quality control, also encourages measurement. Above all, it recalls that "these vessels burn diesel or heavy fuel oil and emit particles some of which are toxic and carcinogenic". The plan must allow the concerned ports to become more virtuous, to the delight of the inhabitants.
