Kabul was hit on Thursday, September 5th by a new attack claimed by the Taliban. This is the second attack of the armed group within a week, while negotiations between Americans and Taliban for an exit from the conflict seem to have taken a decisive step.

Access to the Shash Darak roundabout was cordoned off. On the road, a dozen charred cars with broken windows. Sidewalks are dotted with debris. The shredded books of a street vendor are scattered on the central reservation. Blood-covered passersby are escorted on foot as ambulances arrive at the screaming sirens.

The junction that was targeted by the car bomb attack is a strategic location in Kabul. Located in the city center, it serves many main axes of the city and is very busy at rush hour as Thursday morning at 10:10 local time, when the explosion has sounded.

Shash Darak is regularly targeted by suicide attacks. The target is often one of the Afghan intelligence offices there. It is this that the Taliban claim to have targeted this morning as a convoy of foreign troops entered their enclosure.

Civilians at the scene

False, say the Afghan authorities who claim that only civilians were on the scene. This attack is the second perpetrated Taliban in Kabul in less than a week. Three days ago, a fortified residential complex where foreigners live was targeted by a fuel tanker truck on which a bomb was placed. At least 16 people were killed, there were more than a hundred wounded.

If Taliban and Americans have reached an agreement in principle for a reduction of violence against a withdrawal of foreign troops, on the ground the Taliban intensify their attacks against foreign and Afghan forces in the country.
