Pope Francis begins a 6-day journey in the Indian Ocean. He arrived this Wednesday evening September 4 in Maputo, the capital of Mozambique, the next weekend he will be in the Malagasy capital where he will make a return trip Monday to Mauritius. This is his second trip to sub-Saharan Africa. In the capital of Mozambique and Madagascar, the focus will be on the fight against poverty and social justice.

In Mozambique, one in two people live on $ 1.90 a day, while in Madagascar, three out of four live on less than two dollars.

To the evils of poverty are added those of climate change. Mozambique is still reeling from the cyclone that hit the city of Beira in central Thailand last March, killing 600 people and leaving thousands homeless.

Peace in this country of East Africa will also be discussed with the signing a month ago of the historic agreement between the government and Renamo , the former rebel opposition party.

In Madagascar marked by years of political instability, François is expected on the ground of the fight against poverty. He should deliver a clear word against corruption and nepotism.

In Mauritius, where Christians account for 30% of the majority of Hindus, it is religious coexistence and ecology that will be at the rendezvous. The tourist island has planted thousands of trees in honor of Pope Francis.
