The ex-prefect of Milan Luciana Lamorgese becomes Minister of the Interior and replaces the head of the League (far right), Matteo Salvini. His appointment clearly indicates a desire to break with the previous government, particularly on the immigration file and after the closure of relations with Europe.

Lorenzo Guerini becomes Minister of Defense. The latter has long been one of the main leaders of the PD when it was headed by Matteo Renzi, which he was the deputy secretary between 2014 and 2017.
