Hurricane Dorian advanced slowly toward the southeast coast of the United States on Tuesday as a dangerous category 2 storm after leaving at least seven dead and major material damage in the Bahamas.

Two people died in the hospital on Tuesday as a result of their injuries, adding to the five dead who had been counted so far, Prime Minister Hubert Minnis announced at a press conference.

"We can anticipate that there will be more deaths. They are preliminary information," said the leader.

Aerial images of the Great Abaco Island emitted by CNN show catastrophic damage scenes, with hundreds of homeless homes, dumped cars, huge floods and debris everywhere.

"This is a crisis of epic proportions , perhaps the worst we have ever experienced," said Dames.

The runways of the Grand Bahama International Airport, in Freeport, were underwater, complicating rescue efforts.

The Bahamas Press website posted a video of the flood of the Rand Memorial Hospital in Freeport, and said patients had to be evacuated.

Yasmin Rigby, a Freeport resident, told AFP that "most of the island was still flooded" and that "it continued to rain with gusts of wind."

"I'm still receiving calls from people asking for help," Rigby said. "I can't move from my apartment. Luckily we have enough provisions."

"Very dangerous"

The US Coast Guard sent MH-60 Jayhawk helicopters to Andros Island, in the southern archipelago, to help with search and rescue tasks, while villagers trapped in their flooded homes called desperate.

The eye of the hurricane "is moving in parallel, but away from the east coast of Florida," said the National Hurricane Center (NHC).

"The United States may have a bit of luck with Hurricane Dorian, but please don't let your guard down," President Donald Trump tweeted. "While heading to the coast, very bad and unpredictable things can happen," he added.

The hurricane, which left about 760 mm of rain in the Bahamas, went down Tuesday to category 2 , on a scale of five, but is still very dangerous as it moves slowly to the United States.

Authorities declared a state of emergency in much of the east coast of the country, where millions of inhabitants could be on Dorian's path.

The Pentagon indicated that 5,000 members of the National Guard and 2,700 military personnel on duty were ready to intervene if necessary.

At 7:00 p.m. (11:00 p.m. GMT), the hurricane was advancing with winds of 175 km / h, the NHC said, which expects Dorian to head north this Wednesday night.

"In its trajectory, the eye of Hurricane Dorian will move dangerously near the east coast of Florida and the coast of Georgia

Wednesday night, "those weather services added.

In Florida, in Coconut Grove, which has a considerable population, residents gathered to help victims of the archipelago.

"We are looking for water bottle drawers, canned food, can openers, flashlights, infant formulas, diapers, mosquito repellent, small generators," said Nathaniel Robinson, pastor of Greater St Paul AME Church.

He added that seven seaplanes were ready to deliver supplies when the weather permits. "Hopefully tomorrow (Wednesday)," he added.

Like other 9,500 people in Florida, Stefanie Passieux was waiting for the cyclone with her two children and her mother in one of the 121 shelters, according to data from the state's emergency management agency.

"I came yesterday, as soon as it opened. They say we are in a state of emergency so I came," he said. "My dad stayed with the cats. He never leaves. He doesn't like shelters."
