The British police have managed to intercept nearly 1.3 tonnes of heroin on a container ship in Felixstowe. In cooperation with the Belgian and Dutch police, four men were arrested in Bergschenhoek on Monday, the British national law enforcement agency NCA reported Wednesday.

The police officers in Felixstowe removed the heroin when mooring the container ship.

"The smugglers had hidden the drugs under towels. It took almost six hours to remove everything," the authorities said.

After the drugs were intercepted, the British authorities put the container back on the container ship. The vessel then left for Antwerp.

Men picked up at unloading container

The container was then taken with a Dutch truck to a shed in the town of Bergschenhoek in South Holland, where four men stood ready to empty the container.

Three men could be arrested immediately. A fourth ran off in his car and could still be arrested at Bunnik.

According to the NCA, this is one of the largest drug seizures in Europe. The heroin had a possible street value of more than 130 million euros.

The four suspects will be brought before the public prosecutor in the Netherlands on Wednesday. It is not yet known whether they will be handed over to the United Kingdom, a spokesperson for the national public prosecutor's office of the Public Prosecution Service reports to NU.nl.
