MEP and Vice-President of the National Assembly Jordan Bardella on Tuesday called for a "moratorium" on immigration to France, considering that the knife attack in Villerbanne (Rhone) is only the "tragic illustration" of a "explosive migration situation".

"Our country can no longer, for economic reasons, security and identity, host an immigration as we know it," he said, after the deadly knife attack in Villeurbanne that is accused an Afghan migrant who was granted asylum in 2018 under the status of "subsidiary protection".

"I solemnly ask you for a moratorium on mass immigration in our country, taking the necessary measures as a matter of urgency", wrote the head of the RN in an open letter to the Minister of the Interior Christophe Castaner.

The vice-president of the RN asks to "reduce to the strict minimum the residence permits", to "put an end to the right of the ground", to "systematically expel the illegals, and to prosecute those who incite, favor and help the illegal immigration in our country".

The socialist mayor of Villeurbanne, Jean-Paul Bret, had judged "shameful" on Sunday the reaction of the far right to the attack, which he said trying to "use a dramatic event for his benefit."
